Alternative wedding photography is in this season. Bold styles, originality and a no nonsense approach to capturing weddings has seen the alternative wedding scene explode and with it, the amount of alternative photographers. But who are we? What separates us from the more the ‘traditional’ types? More importantly, what misconceptions do people have about us and the couples we work with.
HERE ARE MY TOP FIVE MISCONCEPTIONS OF ALTERNATIVE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY:

Number 1. You must look ‘alternative’.
So many things wrong with the above statement. No, not all of the couples we work with, dress in an “alternative” Way. As much as I love photographing couples who have a style. Alternative photography is about people who want to plan a wedding their way, not abiding by the traditional format. Our photography style and philosophy are alternative, not the way we look.

Number 2. They don’t want to do anything traditional…
We always strive to meet what the customer requires and wants! Our customers also vary in their uniqueness (trust me, there are some unique couples out there). However, our clients often bring their own traditions or create new spins on them and that we want to capture them in our own style. For the most part, we have honed our craft and we support couples who embrace their originality, create their own traditions and break the mould.

Number 3. We make couples do lots of weird posing!
No. Pushing couples to pose in weird ways doesn’t make you an alternative wedding photographer, it makes you a weird wedding photographer. Again, I follow the clients lead on this. If the client wants to do weird poses, f*ck it, let’s do it!

Number 4: If you do non-traditional wedding photography, or you pick an alternative photographer, you must be non-traditional?
Well, depends on how you define ‘traditional’? For me, I follow this style because I love watching couples do their wedding day how they want. It gives me great excitement and I love doing things differently! For the couple, you absolutely do not have to define yourselves as ‘alternative’, ‘edgy’, ‘unique’, or any other buzzword. Just think, if you have a crazy or unique take on what your perfect day is (Festival wedding springs to mind), maybe you are going the non-traditional route!

Number 5. They don’t take their job seriously.
This is my full-time job, and I work hard to make sure I get to know every couple before the big day. I plan my own timeline for your day so that I know exactly where I need to be when sh*t is going down, so you don’t have to worry. My business is fully insured, run properly and is well invested in with time, effort and money. At the end of the day, for me that’s what it’s all about, bringing couple’s and their weddings alive, with a tailor-made service that suits YOU.
Challenging the norm is something we do at each wedding. That’s why I love being an alternative wedding photographer and working in this industry! SO, if you plan on doing your day in your own unique way, reach out to me, get the kettle on, and let’s create magical memories!
